BELTON (February 9, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s and women’s tennis teams closed out with a strong performance on the final day of the rain-shortened Crusader Challenge Tournament Saturday in Belton. The two-day, four-team, flighted tournament featured men’s and women’s teams from UMHB, Howard Payne University, Southwestern University and Austin College and much of Saturday’s action was washed out by rain.
In flight one women’s singles, UMHB’s Brittni Fausett posted a 6-1, 601 victory over Southwestern’s Aimee Blake. Chaley Shiffler fell to Southwestern’s Gabby Hunt 6-1, 6-4.
In flight two women’s singles, Ashlee Bilbo topped Austin College’s Jessie Berger 2-6, 6-2, 10-5. UMHB’s Hannah Warren posted a 6-3, 6-1 win over Southwestern’s Virginia Stofer.
In flight three women’s singles, Angelie Juaneza fell to Southwestern’s Marieke Visser 6-4, 6-4. Tawnie Yeaw beat Southwestern’s Kristina Krampitz 6-2, 6-3.
In flight four women’s singles, UMHB’s Paola Nunez beat Southwestern’s Sharon Saltoon 7-5, 7-6(4) before falling to teammate Elizabeth Ostroff 6-3, 6-2. Ostroff also beat Southwestern’s Chelsea Sommerfeldt 6-2, 6-1. The Cru’s Penelope Kittel opened with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Austin College’s Katherine Alshire before beating Southwestern’s Sarah Johnson 6-1, 6-2.
For UMHB in flight one men’s singles, Will Summers was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Luis Vallecillo of Howard Payne. Jake Stamps rolled past AC’s Tyler Roush 6-0, 6-3.
In flight two men’s singles, the Cru’s Collin Davies fell to Southwestern’s Alec Bergerson 6-3, 6-1. UMHB’s John Martin beat Jacob Carrillo of HPU 6-0, 6-0.
In flight three men’s singles, Jimmy Turner knocked off Spencer Gander of Austin College 6-0, 6-3. Tevin Ogo posted a 7-5, 6-1 win over Nolan Etheridge of HPU.
In flight four men’s singles, T.J. Kittrell beat Zach Bomar of Austin College 6-2, 6-1 and topped HPU’s Marshal McIntosh 6-1, 6-0.
All of the singles and doubles finals were rained out. The Cru will now open dual match play at home with 2:00 PM start against LeTourneau University on February 23rd.
