BELTON (October 16, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor volleyball team took control of the match early and the Cru held on for a 3-0 victory over U.T.-Tyler Tuesday evening in Belton. UMHB improves to 17-5 overall and 10-4 in American Southwest Conference play. The loss drops the Patriots to 11-13 overall and 4-10 in the ASC on the season.
The Cru posted a 25-14, 25-19, 25-23 victory. UMHB hit .459 in the first set and jumped out to an early 7-2 lead. The Patriots would not get closer than two points in that set. The Cru took a 3-0 lead to open the second set and after U.T.-Tyler cut it to 4-3, UMHB would stretch it back out and led by at least three points the rest of the way. The Patriots led 12-8 midway through the third set before the Cru rallied to tie the match at 14. UMHB would trail 20-17 before winning four straight points. The two teams would trade points and the lead before the Cru won the final two points to break a 23-23 tie.
Sapphire Reid led UMHB with 14 kills and nine digs. Lauren Powell, Tina Miller and Cheyenne Dowdey all added 10 kills apiece in a balanced hitting attack. Shelby Prather had 31 assists and Kendall Pye added 11 more.
Janel Cox led the Patriots with 11 kills and 17 assists. Maci Lott had 10 kills and Mallory Roberts posted 16 assists. Emily Wood had a match-high 13 digs for U.T.-Tyler.
The Cru will host two more matches this week to close out ASC play. UMHB will take on East Texas Baptist in a 6:00 PM start on Friday before closing out the weekend with a 5:00 PM match against Mississippi College on Saturday.
