UMHB Women Lead After First Round Of NCAA Golf Championship

DESTIN, Fla. (May 14, 2013) -- The UMHB women’s golf team put together a solid first round and leads all-teams with a team total of 306 on a windy afternoon at the Baytowne Golf Course at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort in Destin, Fla.

The Cru leads American Southwest Conference foe U.T.-Tyler by three shots. U.T.-Tyler’s 309 ranks them second while defending national champion Methodist University sits in third with a 318. George Fox’s 319 puts them in fourth place while DePauw University and Southwestern are tied for fifth with 321. Claremont Mudd Scripps and St. Olaf are tied for seventh with 326 while Centre College’s 328 is good enough for ninth and Illinois Wesleyan rounds out the top 10 with a 329.

The Cru women were paced by Elizabeth Davis’s opening day 75. Davis is tied for sixth individually. Kelly Gonyea and Victoria Thane both shot 76, putting them in a four-way tie for ninth. Taylor O’Rear’s 79 ranks her at 17th while Sara Eckert shot an 84 and is tied for 50th.

I am really excited about the position we are in after the first day,” Cru head coach Darla Kirby said. “We played really well today, but we know there are other teams here who can shoot low as well. I am confident the nerves will settle tomorrow and we’ll play our game.”

The Cru will start their second round on Wednesday morning with tee times beginning at 8:20 a.m. The team will once again be paired with Methodist and Claremont Mudd Scripps.

The four-day 72-hole event is being played on a par-71 layout at Bawtowne Gold Course. The UMHB women are making their third consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III National Championship and their ninth overall NCAA postseason appearance.
