Spring Branch (October 23, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team kept up its blistering pace on the final day as the Cru rolled to a 39-stroke victory at the Alamo City Classic Tuesday in Spring Branch.
The UMHB women followed Monday’s school record 303 with a 304 on Tuesday to set a new school 36-hole record with a 607 team total. Tournament host Trinity University finished in second place with a 339-307=646. U.T.-Tyler claimed third place after shooting 338-326=664, Schreiner University posted a 345-322=667 for fourth place, Concordia Texas took fifth place with a 341-328=669, Texas Lutheran University finished sixth with a 350-344=694 and Hardin-Simmons University rounded out the field with a 359-339=698.
UMHB also claimed the top three individual spots. Taylor O’Rear won her second straight individual championship after shooting 70-73=143. Victoria Thane took second place, eight shots behind O’Rear with a 76-75=151 and Elizabeth Davis claimed third place with a 75-77=152. Sara Eckert tied for seventh place after posting an 83-77=160, Kelly Gonyea tied for ninth after carding an 82-79=161, Ashley Garbade tied for 17th place at 85-81=166, Emily Santos tied for 22nd place with an 84-84=168 and Allison Holly took 39th place with a 97-92=189.
The previous low team 36-hole total in the history of the program was a 611 at the HSU Classic in 2003-04. O’Rear’s 143 topped her own school individual 36-hole record of 149 set at the Golfweek Fall Preview last week in Florida and shared with Holly Glover (2005 ASC Championship Tournament). O’Rear also shared the individual championship at last week’s tournament, giving her back-to-back titles.
The two-day, 36-hole event was played on a par-72, 5,814-yard layout at River Crossing Golf Course in Spring Branch. This tournament also closes out the fall tournament schedule for the UMHB women.
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s golf team improved by 14 strokes on the final day and the Cru moved up to a third place finish at the Alamo City Classic Tuesday. The UMHB men posted a final round 293 for a 307-293=600 team score to finish 25 shots behind team champion U.T.-Tyler’s 295-280=575 total. Second place went to Southwestern University at 305-293=598, two shots ahead of the Cru. Tournament host Trinity University finished fourth after shooting 303-306=609, Texas Lutheran University was fifth at 308-306=614, Schreiner University’s 304-313=617 was good for sixth place, Hardin-Simmons University finished seventh with a 313-306=619 and Concordia Texas rounded out the field with a 320-305=625 team total.
Pablo Mena Medrano posted the low individual finish for the UMHB men after carding a 78-70=148. Mena Medrano finished in tenth place individually. Robby Schimmels tied for 12th place after firing a 77-73=150 and Justin Judkins (76-76), Matt Day (76-76) and Stayton Lindeman (78-74) all 152’s to tie for 14th place. U.T.-Tyler’s John Dukes won the individual title after posting a 71-66=137.
