Georgetown, TX (November 17, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s basketball team could not recover from a 4:37 scoreless stretch to close the first half as the Cru dropped an 84-53 decision to Whitworth University Saturday night in Georgetown. The loss drops UMHB to 0-2 on the season and closes out the Southwestern University Tip-Off Classic. Whitworth improves to 2-0 on the year with the victory.
The Cru kept it close through the early going before the Pirates would start to pull away. Jovana Miles hit a put-back for UMHB to cut it to 36-27 with 4:37 left in the first half, but Whitworth closed the half with an 8-0 run to make it a 17-point game at the half. The Cru scored the first four points of the second half, but that’s as close as it would get with Whitworth slowly pull away for the 31-point victory.
Taylor Tucker once again topped UMHB with 20 points and she added eight rebounds. Miles posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards for the Cru. UMHB shot just 26 percent from the field in the second half and finished at 33 percent for the game. The Cru also turned the ball over 32 times in the game.
Bethany Fleming led four players in double figures with 17 for Whitworth and she also grabbed a team-best nine rebounds. KC McConnell chipped in 16 points and Jamie Lyons and Kayla Johnson scored 10 points apiece. The Pirates shot 43 percent from the field and out rebounded UMHB 46-42 in the contest.
The Cru will now return to the Mayborn Campus Center for the home opener Tuesday night. UMHB will host Southwestern University for a 5:30 PM start as the opener of a women’s-men’s doubleheader.
