Sandestin, FL (October 16, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team blew away the school record for low 54-hole score, but the Cru could not hold off Methodist’s final round charge and finished in second place at the Golfweek Division III Fall Preview Tuesday in Florida. The UMHB women held an eight-shot lead on Methodist entering the final round but could not overcome the Monarchs final day 299 team total.
UMHB’s Taylor O’Rear tied for the individual title after shooting a school-record 225 total with rounds of 74-75-76. She shared the individual championship with Loretta Giovannettone of Methodist (76-74-75=225). Elizabeth Davis tied for fifth place for the Cru after firing a 72-81-76=229, Kelly Gonyea shot 79-75-83=237 to tie for10th place, Victoria Thane tied for 14th place with an 80-80-82=242 and Sara Eckert shot 88-80-79=247 to tie for 31st place.
The Cru fired a 305-310-313=928 team score in the tournament and fell six shots off the pace set by Methodist’s 317-306-299=922. Washington-St. Louis finished third after posting a 309-316-304=929. Illinois Wesleyan took fourth place at 320-321-324=965 and Centre College rounded out the top five at 325-315-327=967. Southwestern University claimed sixth place with a 327-327-320=974, Allegheny College was seventh at 332-328-336=996, Birmingham-Southern was eighth with a 337-321-346=1,004, Carleton College recorded a 357-327-324=1,008 for ninth place and Piedmont College finished tenth with a 352-330-334=1,016. Berry College was 11th with a 354-344-347=1,045, Oglethorpe University finished 12th with a 350-341-363=1,054, Randolph-Macon’s 366-353-355=1,074 was good for 13th and Huntingdon College rounded out the 14-team field with a 368-359-378=1,105. The three-day, 54-hole event was played on a par-72, 5,880-yard layout at the Baytowne Golf Club in Sandestin, Florida.
O’Rear’s three-day total of 225 is six strokes better than the previous record of 231 set by Holly Glover at the 2005 NCAA Division III National Championships. The team score of 928 is 31 shots better than the previous school 54-hole record. The old program record of 959 was set at the Jekyll Island Invitational during the 2011-12 school year.
The Cru women will play one more event to wrap up the fall tournament schedule. UMHB will travel to San Antonio to play in the Alamo City Classic at River Crossing Golf Course on October 22nd and 23rd.
