Seguin (September 10, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's golf team posted six scores in the 70's and the Cru is in third place in the team standings after the opening round of the Lady Bulldog Fall Classic Monday afternoon in Seguin. The UMHB women recorded a 314 team total to trail first-round leader U.T.-Brownsville's 307 by seven strokes. U.C.-Santa Cruz is in second place with a 310 score. Houston-Victoria fired a 316 for fourth place, Southwestern is in fifth place at 323, Southwestern's "B" team holds down sixth place with a 338 and tournament host Texas Lutheran University rounds out the field with a 344 team total. The two-day, 36-hole event is being played on a par-71, 5,991-yard layout at The Golf Club of Seguin.
Individually, UMHB was led by Ashley Garbade. Garbade posted a 77 in her first competitive collegiate round and sits in a tie for fifth place. Victoria Thane and Kelly Gonyea are tied for 11th place after firing 78's for the Cru. Taylor O'Rear, Elizabeth Davis and Emily Santos all shot 79's and are tied for 15th place. Allison Holly is tied for 22nd place with an 82 and Sara Eckert shot 84 to tie for 25th place. Yukari Shichishima of U.C.-Santa Cruz has the individual lead after shooting 75 on Monday.
The tournament is the first for the UMHB women under new head coach Nancy Taylor-Capps. Taylor-Capps took over this summer after Darla Kirby was promoted to Associate Athletic Director. The tournament wraps up with tomorrow's final round. Teams will tee off with an 8:30 AM shotgun start.
