JEKYLL ISLAND, GA (March 17, 2013) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team posted the lowest round of the tournament when it mattered most as the Cru won the team title at the Jekyll Island Invitational Sunday afternoon in Georgia. The UMHB women posted a 323-316-315=954 team total and beat 15-time defending national champion Methodist University (324-315-321=960) by six strokes. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps took third place with a 318-321-325=964, Illinois Wesleyan claimed fourth place after shooting 328-337-317=982 and U.T.-Tyler rounded out the top five with a 339-322-323=984. There was a 21-team field in the event.
Victoria Thane posted the low individual finish for the Cru women. Thane took third place with a 79-76-80=235. Kelly Gonyea shot 81-77-79=237 to tie for fourth place. Sara Eckert fired an 82-81-78=241 to tie for 12th place, Elizabeth Davis tied for 16th after posting 82-82-78=242, Taylor O’Rear tied for 34th place with an 81-83-83=247 and Ashley Garbade shot 85-83-84=252 to tie for 46th place individually. Elizabeth Cheng of Hollins University won the individual title after carding an 81-71-76=228.
The three-day, 54-hole event was played on a par-72, 8,838-yard layout at Indian Mound Golf Course in Jekyll Island, Georgia. The UMHB women will now return to action with the Blue Bonnet Classic, hosted by Northwood University. That tournament will be played March 25th and 26th at Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie.
