UMHB Men's Basketball Assistant Heading To Schreiner

Belton (April 30, 2012) -- University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball assistant coach Jimmy Smith has been named the new Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Schreiner University, the school announced over the weekend. Smith leaves his alma mater after serving as assistant coach for the past three seasons.

With Smith on staff, the Cru men’s basketball team won an American Southwest Conference Championship, advanced to the NCAA Division III “Sweet 16” for the first time in school history and recorded the best single-season record in the history of the program with a 24-1 mark this year. UMHB posted an overall record of 70-18 and earned three straight berths in the NCAA Division III National Championships during his tenure.

“I am tearfully happy and excited for Jimmy,” Cru head coach Ken DeWeese said. “He has a great future as a head coach and he is ready. He did a tremendous job for us and he is the latest in a long line of assistants who’ve gone on to be very successful and Jimmy is as good as any of them.”

Smith takes over a Schreiner program that finished 13-13 overall and advanced to the ASC Tournament for the first time in its history. The Mountaineers are expected to return all but three lettermen from that squad this season. Smith replaces Drew Miller has Schreiner’s head coach. Miller resigned after his wife was transferred to Washington, D.C.

Smith is a 2004 graduate of UMHB with a degree in business administration. He was a four-year basketball letter winner for the Cru and also served as a team captain for UMHB. Smith was an ASC All-West Division selection and an ASC Academic All-Conference choice. He was also named to the Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District VI First Team during his UMHB career. Smith earned a Master’s Degree in business administration from Sam Houston State University in 2005. He spent two years as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State from 2004-2006. The Bearcats posted a 40-21 overall record and went 22-10 in Southland Conference play during Smith’s years on the coaching staff. Smith and his wife, Lori, were married in the summer of 2010 and welcomed their first child in December of 2011.
