Belton (March 13, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team used different methods in the two games, but the results were the same as the Cru swept a doubleheader from Concordia Texas for the second straight day on Tuesday. UMHB took game one 11-2 before winning the second game 3-0 to capture all four games of the weekend series.
UMHB grabbed the lead with a four-run second inning in the first game and never looked back on the way to an 11-2 victory. Leanne Hinojosa’s three-run double was the biggest hit in the second for the Cru. The Tornados cut the gap to 4-2 in the third. But UMHB answered with Caitlin Bollier’s RBI double and Hannah White’s RBI single in the fourth. The Cru added single runs in the fifth and sixth before putting it out of reach with three more in the seventh. Bollier’s two-run double did most of the damage in the final scoring frame. Ariel Kemmerer tossed a complete-game, three-hitter to improve to 2-1. She did not allow an earned run. Bollier, White and Kaysie Creech had two hits apiece to lead a 13-hit Cru offensive attack.
UMHB scored three late runs to break up a pitcher’s duel in a 3-0 game two win. Caitlin Wells singled home a fifth-inning run for the Cru and Camryn Bintz doubled home two more in the sixth to give UMHB a 3-0 lead. That was more than enough offense for Cru hurler Rebekah Ragsdale. Ragsdale scattered four hits and struck out three to move to 4-3 on the year. White had two of UMHB’s nine hits in the victory.
The Cru is now 8-7 overall and 4-0 in American Southwest Conference West Division play on the season. UMHB will return to action with a four-game series at Howard Payne this weekend in Brownwood. Concordia falls to 6-8 overall and 0-4 in the ASC West on the year with the two losses.
The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team could not hold two early lead as the Cru dropped a 9-6 decision to U.T.-Tyler in non-conference action Tuesday in Belton. UMHB falls to 10-8 on the season with the loss. The Patriots improve to 15-4 on the year with the victory.
The Patriots bunched four singles together, including three infield hits to grab a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. UMHB answered with three in the bottom of the first on RBI singles from Seth Mogavero, Braden Embry and Zach Young. Chris Florack walked, stole second and third and then scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-2 Cru in the second. Tyler tied the game with solo home runs in the third and fourth innings. UMHB retook the lead 5-4 on Seth Lynn’s RBI groundout in the bottom of the fourth. The Patriots tied the game and then took a 7-5 lead on Aaron McCain’s two-run single in the top of the sixth. Florack tripled and scored on Embry’s sacrifice fly in the seventh to cut it to 7-6, but the Patriots added some breathing room with two runs in the top of the ninth. Derek Miller set down UMHB in the ninth to clinch the win for U.T.-Tyler.
Kreece Cooper took the loss for the Cru to drop to 0-1 on the season. Tye Weber earned the win for U.T.-Tyler to move to 1-0 and Miller notched his fourth save of the year. Mogavero and Chris Joshlin had two hits apiece for UMHB. Isaac Tijerina had for hits and McCain added two hits and three RBI for the Patriots.
The UMHB baseball team will continue its home stand with a three-game American Southwest Conference West Division series against Howard Payne University this weekend. The two teams will open the series with a 7:00 PM single game Friday night before closing out the weekend with a 1:00 PM doubleheader on Saturday.
