Lufkin (April 16, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women's golf team opened defense of its American Southwest Conference Championship in grand fashion, taking a commanding lead on the opening day of the 2012 ASC Championship Tournament Monday in Lufkin. The Cru women posted a 340 team total and lead the tournament by 12 strokes over second-place Schreiner University's 352 score. U.T.-Tyler is in third place with a 361, Concordia Texas holds down fourth place at 364 and McMurry University carded a 400 to round out the top five. Texas Lutheran University is in sixth place with a 409, Hardin-Simmons University posted a 441 for seventh place and U.T.-Dallas shot 466 for eighth place.
UMHB freshman Taylor O'Rear holds down the individual lead after shooting 80 on Monday. She holds a three-stroke advantage over Katie Crawford of U.T.-Tyler. O'Rear's UMHB teammate Kelly Gonyea is in third place with an 84, Sara Eckert is tied for fourth place after firing an 85 for the Cru, Kristen Cain is in 14th place with a 91 and Victoria Thane is tied for 18th place after shooting a 95 for the Cru.
UMHB won last year's ASC Tournament by five shots over Schreiner University to record its ASC record eight conference crown. The ASC Tournament Champion will also claim the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships. The two-day, 36-hole event is being played on a par-72, 5,188-yard layout at Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin. Teams will tee off for tomorrow's final round with an 8:30 AM shotgun start.

The UMHB men posted a 316-308=624 and trail first day leader U.T.-Tyler's 300-295=595 by 29 strokes. LeTourneau University is in third place after carding a 312-318=630, U.T.-Dallas is fourth at 322-310=632 and Schreiner University rounds out the top five with a 318-319=637. Concordia Texas is in sixth place with a 320-321=641, Louisiana College is seventh at 330-332=662, defending conference champion Texas Lutheran is in eight place after shooting 327-337=664 and Hardin-Simmons is ninth at 340-334=674.
UMHB was led by Robby Schimmels on the opening day. Schimmels is in fourth place with a 77-75=152, sis shots behind individual leader Jacob Walsh of U.T.-Tyler (71-75=146). Stayton Lindeman is tied for ninth place after firing a 79-77=156 for the Cru, Mike McQuaid and Evan Kaye both posted 82-78=160's for UMHB and are tied for 18th place and Michael Haney is in 30th place with a 78-86=164 total.
