UMHB Women's Golf Win, Men Finish Fifth

Georgetown (April 10, 2012) -- The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team improved by five strokes and one very important spot in the standings on the final day as the Cru fought back to win the Southwestern University Invitational Tuesday in Georgetown. The UMHB women shot 336-331=667 to edge tournament host Southwestern University’s 334-336=670 by three strokes. Trinity University finished third with a 337-346=683, St. Mary’s College finished in fourth place with a 345-342=687, Concordia Texas took fifth place with a 353-348=701, Willamette University’s 361-365=726 was sixth and Texas Lutheran University rounded out the field with a 372-375=747 team total.

Taylor O’Rear tied for second place to post the low individual finish for the UMHB women. O’Rear carded a 79-84=163 to tie with McKenzie Weinhold of Willamette University. Kelly Gonyea tied for fourth place after shooting 84-81=165 for the Cru, Kristen Cain (87-81) and Sara Eckert (88-80) tied for eighth place with 168’s, Victoria Thane shot 86-89=175 to take 18th place and Allison Holly tied for 19th place with a 92-85=177. Southwestern’s Karissa Speck won the individual title after shooting 84-76=160.

The two-day, 36-hole event was played on a par-72, 5,808-yard layout at Berry Creek Golf Course in Georgetown. The Cru will return to action with the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin. The UMHB women are the defending ASC champions.

The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s golf team posted the lowest team round on the final day as the Cru moved up two spots to tie for fifth place at the West Region Invitational Tuesday in Georgetown. The UMHB men posted a 326-311-300 to tie with Millsaps College (309-313-315) for fifth place at 937. Tournament host Southwestern University won the tournament after carding a 302-301-305=908 team score. Trinity University (313-308-306) and Concordia Texas (310-305-312) tied for second place with 927’s and Texas Lutheran University claimed fourth place with a 320-313-301=934. LeTourneau University was seventh with a 310-315-316=941, George Fox took eighth place with a 328-323-329=980, Willamette University was ninth with a 346-333-334=1013 and University of Dallas shot 343-352-374=1069 for tenth place.

Bryce Myburgh posted the low individual finish for the Cru. Myburgh claimed fifth place with a 72-76-81=229. Caleb Asp fired a 76-77-77=230 for UMHB to tie for sixth place. Robby Schimmels posted an 82-75-74=231 to tie for ninth place, Michael Haney (78-79-79) and Spencer Turner 81-76-79) tied for 19th place with 236’s. Mike McQuaid (84-76-77) and Pablo Mena Medrano (83-77-77) tied for 22nd place with 237’s, Evan Kaye tied for 32nd place with an 82-84-74=240, Stayton Lindeman carded an 87-81-75=243 to finish 41st and Justin Judkins took 47th place with an 87-78-83=248. Concordia’s Jack Cersosimo won the individual title after recording a 73-70-69=212.

The two-day, 72-hole event was played on a par-72, 6,600-yard layout at Berry Creek Golf Course in Georgetown. The Cru will return to action with the American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin.
