You're going to hear or read about plenty of father/son story lines today. Tiger Woods will tee off in the final group at the U.S. Open at 3:30pm. If Tiger holds onto his 3rd round lead, as he's done every time as a pro in a major, it will be his first U.S. Open title since his Father passed away in 2006. And Torrey Pines, site of the '08 Open, is only a couple hours South of the Woods' hometown of Cypress, CA.
At 8:00pm the Celtics could be 48 minutes from Boston's first NBA title since 1986. Boston forward Paul Pierce, a veteran of 9 NBA seasons and 62 playoff games, and his fiance Julie welcomed their first child (a daughter, Prianna) into the world just two months ago.
The stories are everywhere.
My father/son tale might not be as dramatic, and might not be worthy of some fancy, well-done feature on network TV, but I wouldn't trade my Pops for anyone.
Dad doesn't say a whole heck of a lot (however compared to my Mother, even Barbara Walters would come off as quiet), but Dad's advice is like having Mariano Rivera on the mound in the 9th with a 3-run lead - it's pretty much a sure thing.
But some of my favorite time spent with Dad, is when we don't have to say anything - the game tells the story. As I play back nearly every sports memory I have, there is one constant - my Dad has been there with me. From my first football game as a fan to my last baseball game as a player, and countless stops in between (including a 13-day, 4,300 hundred mile DRIVING tour of East coast major league baseball stadiums and the Hall of Fame) Dad's done it all. I'm a sports fan because he was (and still is) a sports fan...and like most sons, all I ever wanted to do was be like my Dad.
So to my Dad, Dennis...Happy Father's Day. And also, Happy Father's Day to his father, Joe...the coolest Grandpa on the planet who knows how to fix anything. But the handiest tool he carries is his ability to put a smile on anyone's face.
I didn't have a chance to know my other Grandfather, "Dutch" Brauner, but I wish I did. Mom says I have his legs, though. And I'm really fast. So thanks, Grandpa.
And thanks to all of the Dads out there. Happy Father's Day.
