One thing that's amazed me following Hurricane Ike is the lack of the national media's attention to the impacts the storm had on the Texas Coast. I think we at News 10 have given this story a lot of coverage (deservedly so), but it seems that few stations outside of Texas have given it much consideration. My parents live in the Kansas City area, and they keep asking me for updates on what's going on in Houston.

I think there are two things going on here. First, I think in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, even a destructive hurricane like Ike looks mild by comparison, at least in the media's eyes. From now on, if a hurricane doesn't leave a city flooded or kill hundreds of people, it's not going to be seen as a "big deal". But consider this: Hurricane Andrew, which before Hurricane Katrina was widely considered the most destructive hurricane in modern history, killed "only" 65 people. The death toll from Ike in the U.S. is already up to 50 and will likely climb higher as recovery efforts continue.

Second, as Chris pointed out to me the other day, there are a couple of issues that have captured the national media's attention, namely the financial crisis and the presidential election. Those are big stories that affect everyone in a very profound way. However, there's still no excuse (in my mind) for ignoring Hurricane Ike. Following Katrina, there was a major outpouring of support and donations from people across America. But with so little attention devoted to Ike and so much fear about the financial situation in this country, I worry that folks along the Texas Coast aren't going to get the help they so desperately need.

It's up to us to help make sure our fellow Texans get the assistance they need. We have hundreds of people right here in Central Texas who are still in shelters, waiting to return home. Several local shelters and relief organizations are asking for donations and volunteers to help those evacuees. Go to this page to find out what these agencies need and where you can go to donate supplies. There's also a great website called Texas Responds that serves as a portal for making donations or volunteering your time to relief organizations working right here in the Lone Star State. And of course, keep the folks along the Texas Coast in your thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks. Many of them are just beginning what could be a long and arduous recovery process.

My Leo Club at Our Lady of Victory School in Victoria would like to help replace lost books for the Baycliff Library. Can anyone tell me what the status is? I understand that books may be the last issue on the recovery list, but if someone can offer another suggestion, we would be willing to do what we can. Are there school item issues that we could help with, clothing, winter jackets(I know, but just in case) ; items for the elderly...We just need to know what we can do. Anyone's help would be appreciated. Please let me know...

JUST WHO DO YOU TALK TO TO GET THE REST OF THE STATES TO UNDERSTAND THE DEVASTION OF OUR BEAUTIFUL ISLAND? THE MEDIA DOES NOT SEEM TO BE PUTTING IN ENOUGH INTERST INTO TO IT, I PERSOANLLY HELPED AFTER KATRINA, GAVE BLANKETS, CLOTHES, FOOD, AND WENT TO A CHURCH AND GAVE MY TIME TO HELP TAKE CARE OF CHILDREN, WHERE THE HELL IS THE SAME CONSIDERATION FOR THE PEOPLE OF GALVESTON. I AM SO SICK ABOUT THE FACT THE MEDIA IS NOT HELPING AND I HAVE A FEW CHOICE WORDS I WOULD LOVE TO SAY, BUT IT WOULD ONLY GO TO DEAF EARS.IT IS A GOOD THING THAT THE PEOPLE FROM THE ISLAND ARE STRONG, WE DID NOT SIT AROUND DOING NOTHING, WE GOT IN THERE AND STARTED HELPING OURSELVES, MORE THAN I CAN SAY ABOUT KATRINA VICTIMS, WHO DID NOTHING BUT COMPLAIN EVEN THOUGH WE ALL PITCHED IN AND HELPED THEM, EVEN TAKING IN FAMILIES INTO OUR ON HOMES.

I live in Bacliff, TX that was affected by Hurricane Ike and I work on Galveston Island that was almost destroyed by the Hurricane. I am so disappointed with the response from the nation or lack there of. There was so little news coverage most of the nation doesn't realize the destruction this hurricane had on the Texas coast and how many Texans have literally only the concrete slabs of their homes left. The focus has been on Hurricane Katrina since it happened but I don't think the nation realizes that entire cities were destroyed! Port Bolivar is gone! The very few homes that weren't swept into the Gulf of Mexico are still destroyed. The main difference in this Hurricane is we had terrific leaders that urged everyone to get out and those that had no means to get out themselves were provided the transportation to get out of town which saved countless numbers of lives. My thoughts and prayers go out to my fellow Texans and coworkers who lost everything in this storm. We will overcome!

No, I saw that Jesse. I was partly reinforcing that point, but mostly taking issue with the stance that the government is supposed to be there to help individuals recover after a disaster. That is NOT the government's role, and it never has been. That's the job of relief organizations like the Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and many others. And given the choice between the government spending more of my money on relief efforts or me giving more of my money to charity, I'll choose the latter. The relief organizations will almost certainly put that money to better use than the government would. Your point about the NFL is well-taken... and you should know that on Friday the Texans organization announced that it would soon be joining the relief effort. That's definitely good to hear.

Keith, I think you missed this in anonymous #1's post:"However we will sacrifice to help our neighbors!" You shouldnt get so riled up! lol I get the gist of that post as well as the other two. As far as celebrities go, there are several that are from Texas..Jessica simpson comes to mind! What about the nfl? They could definitely use some good publicity and they were affected as well since reliant stadium was damaged! Maybe some fans need to start writing some letters and help inspire these folks to help out! There are so many things they could do and many have a fan base that will follow their lead! Anyway you would think they would want to help their state!

Anonymous #1: "Citizen Joe and Jane", as you call them, have ALWAYS been there to help out their fellow Americans. The fact is that charitable organizations do the most good for those in need in this country, not the government, and those organizations rely on volunteers and donations. I understand times are hard for a lot of people, but if everyone were to give just a little bit, it would go such a long way to helping those in need. Americans have always made sacrifices to help their neighbors in times of need, and that's one of the things has made this country so great!

Posted by: Anonymous OAFrah (the second most rascist person behind the Rev. Jesse) won't help because the majority of displaced residents were not black like New Orleans.

Posted by: Anonymous Just wondering why this would be the celebrities responsibility to fix! Our government is bailing out failing businesses run into the ground by greedy CEOs and such while our citizens suffer due to these disasters! Under this administration it has been expected that citizen joe and jane will take care of those in need! The problem with that is that the majority of people are struggling to take care of their own families and dont have extra to give! However we will sacrifice to help our neighbors! Something our government cant/wont do beyond throwing out a bone here and there!

I said pretty much the same thing yesterday. Where are the celebrities (Oprah came to mind first) with their donations and pleas for help?I have several opinions as to where they are and why they aren't concerned, but I will keep them to myself!
