College Football News.com put out its list of the best college quarterback factories.  The rankings only span the last 40 years (from 1970-present), so for example, TCU's dynamic duo of Sammy Baugh and Davey O'Brien in the 1930's is no good here.

Also, the list is based ONLY on college production and does not take into account anything that happened (or didn't happen) in the NFL.

Here's the Top 20:

1) Oklahoma
2) Miami
3) USC
4) Florida
5) BYU
6) Nebraska
7) Texas
8) Florida State
9) Purdue
10) Michigan
11) Tennessee
12) Boston College
13) Penn State
14) Notre Dame
15) Washington
16) Stanford
17) Fresno State
18) Houston
19) Syracuse
20) Washington State

Fresno State?  Really?  I guess David Carr was the top pick in the 2002 Draft.  But quick...in ten seconds, can you name another Fresno State QB besides Carr and Trent Dilfer?

What about Georgia?  Eric Zeier, Quincy Carter, David Greene, DJ Shockley and Matt Stafford were all very solid, if not above average, college QB's.

And how do you think Mike Leach feels about Tech being left off this list?  Especially since BYU and U of H, two other "systems" made the cut.

To answer the Fresno State question, easy. Billy Volek, Tom Brandstarter, Paul Pinegar. All are in the NFL except Pinegar.

Mark, thanks for the post. And well played on the Paul Pinegar reference! I actually saw Pinegar play a couple of times in the WAC when I was working in Monroe, LA and covering Louisiana Tech.

If you're talking 40 years, I'd have to say this list is okay. When you think about it, in college football 40 years can mean somewhere between 10 and 40 quarterbacks. BYU has produced heisman winners, and record setting qbs (Detmer, McMahon, Young) Fresno State before Dilfer had a guy named Kevin Sweeney who set the NCAA passing record. Paul Pinegar won 3 bowl games (lost his senior year)after Carr left. UH also had guys like Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan who destroyed record books. As for Georgia, usually you think RB's and defense. Sure Stafford was exceptional, but outside the SEC I don't think the others you mentioned are remembered that well. Give Tech a couple more decades and I'm sure they'll have a shot at the next list.
