Oh Wait... There was a Tornado!

Posted: Thu 7:42 AM, Mar 04, 2010

We had the fewest number of tornadoes ever across the U.S. in February, but there was one...

The weather world was buzzing earlier this week that there had been no tornadoes reported anywhere in the United States for the month of February, but an update has been sent out and one tornado did occur.  This lone tornado touched down 15 miles northeast of Taft California (which is about 120 miles north of Los Angeles).

Having only one tornado reported across the country for February is an amazing stat! On average we should see around 37 tornadoes touch down across the country during February.  Between 2007 & 2009 the country averaged 78 tornadoes each February, and in 2008 a record of 147 tornadoes were reported.

December, January, and February usually see the smallest number of tornadoes compared to other months of the year, but as you can see in the graph below the number of reported tornadoes will likely quickly rise over the next couple of months.
