How even younger Central Texans have reached out to a whole other part of the world.

(April 7, 201) - Another moment that impacted me on my trip in Ferrier was at Jackson Nelson's school on the World Hunger Relief site.

A group of Haitian boys and girls were reading, not in Haitian Creole, but English. They were reading cards sent to them from other students their own age in Lorena.

Sharon Wolfe, a teacher at Lorena Middle School has brought back her own experiences in Haiti to her students for the past couple of years. She has told them about Haitian students' daily lives, how they must sometimes miss school to help their parents, and how three meals a day is often unheard of.

Apparently, her students were listening.

When the earthquake hit, those kids also wanted to help. Seven girls I spoke with took time to go around to their peers, their neighbors and their family and ask "Will you give?"

They managed to collect more than $600 to send to Haiti. Those students also wrote letters to their peers overseas in an effort to comfort those who lost loved ones in the earthquake.

Lorena students were reaching out to kids in a whole other corner of the world.

That is just one example of how students across Central Texas responded. I know there were many other schools that held drives, put up donation sites and gave donations themselves to the need in Haiti.

There are many students in Ferrier who need sponsors to go to school and get at least one meal a day. If you would like to form your own relationship with one of those kids, call Mission Waco at (254) 753-4900 and ask about Jim & Sharon Wolfe's project.

You can also call Hope For The Hungry out of Belton to ask how you can help. Call (254) 939-0124.
