The beauty of being the son of a tax collector is that my taxes were signed, sealed, and delivered in February!
I've already received my refund...and spent (a few times over actually!)
My mom has been collecting taxes for a school district near my hometown of Pittsburgh for the last 15 years. In that time I think she has heard every excuse in the book why people don't pay their taxes. Some have compelling arguments...lay-offs, health concerns, etc. Others apparently just don't seem to feel the need to pay their taxes...it is an idea that escapes me!
I have to admit, it might sound naive, but I just can't imagine not paying your taxes! It is like when my banker told me how many people just don't decide to pay their bills. Now, again, I'm not heartless and do understand that there are circumstances where people cannot pay for one reason or another. Apparently, though, there are a lot of people who just take the approach that if someone wants the money bad enough, they'll come after it.
Again...not how I operate.
I've seen the results of what happens when people don't pay...as a matter of fact, as I write this my mom is in court setting up the sheriff's sale of a respected business owner who withheld local taxes from his employees, but never bothered to pay them to the state of Pennsylvania. She said he will most like have his personal possessions sold at Sheriff's sale until the debt is paid off.
Not worth it to me...seems like less trouble just to be honest.
