Recently I was assigned a story focusing on career-focused learning...basically programs that are non-traditional degrees, teaching people a specific skill. I had no idea what a HUGE phenomena this has become!
At TSTC they're seeing an incredible placement rate for their students. I interviewed one guy...just 20 years old...working in the computerized controls and robotics program. This program teaches students how to work on giant, high tech factory and refining equipment. Well this particular student, Matthew, already has a solid offer at Chevron Oil for when he graduates later this summer...and has two other companies beating down his door trying to recruit him.
Another student, Brett, is on the Golf Course and Landscape Management program...another industry that is exploding in growth. He is getting ready to leave on a summer-long internship in Birmingham, Alabama...and is truly excited by what he studies.
College was always a little dull for me -- I knew exactly what I wanted to do in life, so I think I missed the enjoyment of some of the more traditional aspects of college. This kind of education is perfect for people like me...who want to hit the world and jump into the thick of things.
I don't want anyone to think I'm bashing the traditional, four-year college. They offer tremendous opportunities and open a lot of doors. However, it was really interesting to see the kind of response this career-focused learning is able to generate.
