The Haunted Couch

Cody Canada, the lead singer of Cross Canadian Ragweed once said in concert, "be careful what you write, you may end up singing it for the rest of your life."

I'm not sure if the quote was his, or just that he was reciting what someone else told him. However, the words stuck with me, and every time I have someone ask me about "The Haunted Couch" story, I am reminded of what Cody said.

The Haunted Couch was a fluke and yet it will be with me as long as I live.

I wasn't even sure if I wanted to do the story when the idea first surfaced. To be honest I don't even know how we first learned of the couch.

The fact is that I went out one morning and shot the story in just a few minutes. I returned to the office and went on with my day. The next day I came in and wrote the story, figuring it would be a good feature for after weather, or perhaps to end the show. As it aired I thought some people might get a kick out of it, and that would be that… I was wrong.

In the days and weeks that followed "The Haunted Couch" has followed me. Go to youtube and search "haunted couch", guess how many times it has been viewed… 1,172 (as of today). I know that isn't a lot, especially compared to "dramatic chipmunk" (6 million views), but nonetheless, it's out there.

I have been to Iraq, covered three State Legislative sessions and numerous called special sessions. I went to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina as well as covered President Bush on at least a dozen occasions. I have met or interviewed everyone from Hillary Clinton and John McCain to Ralph Nader and Joel Olsteen. I have witnessed first hand the best and worst that this world has to offer, yet it is the couch that people ask about.

Don't get me wrong, I am proud of the couch. Everyone that sees the story comments on it and asks me if I really think it was haunted. They ask if I got a funny feeling from it. They ask if it sold. They ask if they can still see it at the store.

While I appreciate the feedback and thank people for taking even the faintest interest in my work, I wish it were for a better story, journalistically speaking.

The "Haunted Couch" story has no verifiable facts to back it up. It is the assertions of one man as told by another man who may, or may not have gotten the story straight.

Perhaps the real curse of the "Haunted Couch" is that it never leaves you.

This is the 3'rd time that I have tried to post a response. The other 2 went into computer oblivion somewhere! (I am serious) I think that you should do a follow up on the haunted couch, AND to Gordon's big foot stories. I loved both stories!
