Congratulations to Julie from Gatesville for the winning suggestion for this blog. While all of the ideas submitted were great (except for Brian from Waco) only one could win and it just so happens that I liked the idea about why people yell at sports on TV.
Before I get to the blog let me take some time and thank all 8 of you who responded to my request for ideas, you have truly made my job easier. Feel free to continue coming up with ideas, because Heaven forbid I have to do my own job.
Now to the blog.
In the interest of full disclosure I come from a long line of people who yell at the sports officials/coaches on TV. My mom and dad both take great pride and telling coaches what they should have done, criticizing the sports commentators for making dumb or way-too-obvious comments and at the officials for bad/missed calls.
I was watching the Stars game the other night and I found myself yelling at the TV after what I thought was a missed tripping call. I was alone in my living room watching the game and when I found myself yelling at the TV.
For me this seems to happen quite a bit. Last year I created a cloud of profanity that still hovers above the TV station after Eli Manning led the Giants on a last second drive for a touchdown in the second quarter of the playoff game against the Cowboys.
While I am not proud of yelling about a tripping call in the hockey game, I stand by all of the 4-letter words I used to describe the Cowboys defense and the Giants offence.
So why do I do this?
The answer simply comes down to frustration.
I am frustrated by what's happening and my inability to alter the course of events. On the bright side, however, it is probably a good thing that I haven't resorted to throwing anything at the TV yet… but then again the Cowboys season kicks off in just a few months.
