Football .. oh how I love thee.

All my life I've been a basketball guy.  I loved it as a kid.  Heck, one of my earliest memories is getting a basketball for Christmas.  I'll never forget the first time I beat my Dad in H-O-R-S-E in the driveway.  I also played hoops in high school and college.   So needless to say, basketball has been number one on my list of sports for some time now.  But if basketball is number 1 on my list ... football might just be 1A.

It didn't used to be like that for me.  Before I moved to Texas five years ago, I liked football.  Now I love it.  Friday nights are as good as it gets for me.  I love walking into a small stadium and seeing the place packed an hour before kickoff.  I love the smell coming off the grills outside the stadium parking lot before the game.  I love the bands, the fans, all of it!

Some people dream of covering the NFL .. or "big time football".  For me though, being at a football stadium on a Friday night is something very special.  And it's something that I know I'm very lucky to be involved with.

Saturdays are pretty special also.  Even though Baylor hasn't won many games since I've been in Waco, covering Big 12 Football is still something I cherish.

Unfortunately, I still have to wait a couple of months until football season starts up.  It's tough, but I guess I'll enjoy the slowdown until two-a-days start.

Thanks Dan! We are looking forward to a very exciting year with the Eagles this year. Thank you for your coverage. Watched their first day of pads and their O-line is HUGE!

Conrad: Yes, we will see the Salado Eagles as a part of out two-a-day tours. I don't know when and what time, but they will be definitely be a big part of our football coverage this year. Maybe they can repeat what the golf and baseball teams did this spring!

I wrote this e-mail originally for Rusty, but it concerns weather and sports, so I wanted to post it here as well. I'm very concerned about the traditional football "two-a-days" that goes on during August, and into September for our young athletes. The temperatures climb to heat exhaustion and heat stroke level. I'm really surprised that our wonderful Texas legislature has not passed a law to protect our young men from being over-worked in the heat. My suggestion: 7 and 7. First practice can't start later than 7:00 am and will last no more than 2 hours, and the second practice can't start earlier than 7:00 pm, and last no longer than two hours. Sure, they need to work-out for football, but let's protect our kids from the heat as well.

I am a huge football fan and have been since I can remember. What I don't like is the direction football is heading. You look at the NFL news and all you get is someone being arrested or suspended for drugs, a shooting, or a team is getting sold, or someone is coming out of retirement, etc... The off field drama and conduct is taking so much away from the best sport on earth. Wait until Congress does an investigation on performance enhancing drugs on the NFL. Rookies making millions and they haven't even played yet. They should all start at the league minimum and earn their money. Now you give them a bucket of money up front and what do they do...go to strip bars and shoot people of blow it on illegal substances over and over and over... I guess that's why it's more exciting to watch NCAA and go to a local Friday Night contest. It's pure football there.

Friday night fever in Texas is something that I've always loved! I enjoy taking a road trip 3, even 4 hours a way just to see some good football...can't get enough of it. I'm ready to find the lights in 2008!

I was an avid football fan until---Jerry Jones. He has a right to have his own coach, but to fire Tom Landry in the way the he did showed me how much football had fallen. Jerry Jones showed the whole football league his lack of class. He is one of the worst things that has ever happened to football. I, nor most of my former football rabid relatives, have watched football (any football) since the firing of Tom Landry. We will not watch until Jerry Jones has nothing to do with football in any form.

Amen, Dan! Two-a-days can't get here soon enough. Thanks for keeping a few pigskin stories in your summer broadcasts.
