Football season is now over and done with in Texas. But dry your eyes Texans, there's no need to cry (unless you're a Colts fan). There's plenty to look forward to in the sports world over the next few weeks.
I'll start with basketball. On the college level, both the Baylor men's and women's teams are poised to be in the big dance. That's a pretty big deal. Especially if you think back to about a decade ago. Both programs were pretty average before Mulkey and Drew came to town. And truthfully, using average to describe the Baylor men's program is being kind. In reality, they were flat out bad. I'm not even talking about the scandal of 2003, I'm just talking about the history of the Bears. Need proof? Right now they are ranked in February for the first time since Nixon was president. Enough said.
Baylor doesn't do if for you? How about some high school hoops. We have several area teams that could make it to state once again this year. Can Midway repeat? I'm not sure, but I know they'll be fun to watch. Kudos to Coach Monsey and his team for having a great year so far. How about the Killeen boys, can they make it to state? I say yes. But they'll have to go through Lake Travis once again.
Midway and Killeen and just two of the many good teams in the area. I realize that there are other squads that might have a shot at state. Is there someone I left out? Let me know in the comments section, or better yet, discuss it on our new message board:
And finally, if hoops isn't your thing, pitchers and catchers report soon. So there's always Spring Training. Two months of meaningless baseball doesn't really do it for me ... but hey ... whatever floats your boat.
