RG3 For Heisman? You Better Believe It.

Updated: Tue 5:56 PM, Nov 02, 2010

There's no doubt about it, Robert Griffin III is a very real Heisman candidate.

About this time each year, I get several e-mails and letters from schools all across the country that are trying to promote a specific Heisman candidate.  They give me stats, facts, figures, and pretty much everything I would ever want to know about a certain college football stud.

This year, I shouldn't expect any letters or e-mails from Baylor promotting Robert Griffin III as a Heisman candidate.  He's a longshot this year, and  I'm sure BU will promote the heck out of RG3 next year when he is a junior.  But I'm not waiting until next year.  I'll go ahead and say it now: Robert Griffin III is one of the best players in American and he should be in the running for the Heisman Trophy.

Here are some facts about the former Copperas Cove star:

* He is 6th in the nation in passing yards per game (and some thought he was just a good runner)

* Griffin is 2nd in the NCAA in total passing yards (3,247)

* He's 3rd in the NCAA in total offense per game (332.56 yards per game)

*  He's 15th in the nation in pass efficiency

But in my mind, here's the most important number when it comes to RG3:

16 - as in it's been 16 years since Baylor last went to a bowl game.  They'll be playing after Christmas this year thanks in large part to Robert Griffin III.  RG3 is a big-time player on the field, and I find it hard to believe that Baylor would be in this position if he weren't on the team.  He makes everyone around him better.  Need proof?  Baylor went 4-8 and last year when he was lost for the season with a torn ACL.  They are 7-2 so far this season.

So yes, Robert Griffin III is defeinitely a Heisman candidate this year.  Is the best player in the country?  Probably not ... But he's close.  And if the Bears keep on winning he deserves to be considered for the Heisman.
