Songs About Texas

No state in the country has inspired more people to put pen to paper than the Lone Star State. I can't really say that as a fact, but I'm pretty sure I'm right. Think about it. When was the last time you heard a song about Michigan or Nevada or Missouri. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure those are all fine states but not likely to wind up in a song title. Some would argue that it's pretty difficult to find words that rhyme with those states. GIve it a try, you'll find that to be true. But it goes much deeper than that. Texas is not just a place, it's a state of mind. Ok that sounds like something out of a travel brochure but it's true. When I moved to the great state of Oklahoma in my younger days I spent a good part of my time thinking about Texas and how I was going to get back. True, it's very hot and humid in the summer. True, there are mosquitoes here that can carry off an 18 wheeler. True, our winters can be miserable, but they only last a couple of weeks at best. I can't really put into words what makes this state so special. Perhaps if I could, I'd have a hit song.

Earlier this week Carl Hoover with the Waco trib asked me to share my favorite song about Texas. I told him, without hesitation that my favorite is "Texas On My Mind" written by Django Walker and recorded by Pat Green. Here's why...I play that song at practically every one of my gigs and it never fails to create visual images for me. That's one way I can tell that a song moves me. Also it reminds me of another of my favorite songs that Django's dad, Jerry Jeff had some success with back in the 70's. "London Homesick Blues" was included on the very first album that I bought on 8 track tape,,,Viva Terlingua. It was recorded in 1973 at one of my favorite places Luckenbach Texas. Then again, almost all of my favorite places are in Texas. It's a multi-faceted state. If you've only visited here once or twice, you have no idea what Texas has to offer. From the rich green grass of Southeast Texas to the Davis Mountains, the Grande Canyon, the white beaches of South Padre and of course all the wonders of the Hill Country, I love it all. It's home. So are you crazy about Texas? Share with me your favorite songs about Texas, your favorite places in Texas and why you love this place too.

Speaking as an eighth generation Texan I was pleased to see this topic come around. You are right Gordan - Texas is a state of mind - and we Texans need to keep that in mind as we slowly watch what gave Texas such a haunting mistique disappear before our eyes. This geat land was formed by folks looking for land, freedom, and a chance to get it right. They found it, nurtured it, and gave it to all of us. Wide open spaces - that's what it is all about. Boundless and tranquil. We need to preserve that ideal and keep "her" safe from the spoils of progress. Sorry to ramble...felt the need to get up on a soap box. As for the song? I've many favorites. The great Marty Robbins and "El Paso" to name one.

Sorry, I misread your post. I do know who Hank Thompson is. Since I grew up listening to the western swing music of Bob Wills, we also listened to the western swing sounds of Hank Thompson. I am still not familiar with his version of Waltz Across Texas. I am not saying he did not sing/record it, I am only saying I am not familiar with it. I only know the Ernest Tubb version.

I said not williams. Too many people dont know who Hank Thompson is but the younger ones might have assumed Williams...duh.

Gordon, I too love everything about Texas. When I was a child, we seldom vacationed outside of the state. My dad always said "There are so many great places in Texas, why leave?" I grew up with parents that loved Bob Wills, a Texas native. San Antonio Rose is a favorite song of mine along with Ernest Tubb's version of Waltz Across Texas(I am not familar with Hank William doing this song as mentioned by Tracy).

Waltz Across Texas is a great Hank song. No, not Williams, Thompson. Great subject!

I may be young, but I do remember hearing a lot of songs about Texas... I would have to say that any songs about Texas I love comes from George Strait. But then again, who doesn't love him? Just this past Easter weekend, I had the privilege of visiting Fossil Rim in Glenn Rose as well as Dublin. Everything about this state is beautiful. No wonder I'm glad to be Texan!

There is so much to love about this state. I think my two favorite Texas tunes have to be Hank, Jr's "Texas Women" and Jimmy Buffett's "Who's the Blonde Stranger".

Wow Teresa, that brought back memories. I remember my mother singing that song. Cross the Brazos at Waco, ride hard and I will make it by dawn, Cross the Brazos at Waco, I'm safe when I reach San Antone. That's all I remember of the lyrics. Her favorite Song was San Antonio Rose though. Gordon, since you love the Texas Hill Country, I am wondering if you have ever been down Willow City Loop, between Llano and Fredericksburg, off HWY 16. It is breath taking, especially in the spring when the blue bonnets are in bloom.

At 44 I am too young to know it first hand, but have heard of it and, if I recall correctly, my grandmother had a copy of it. If she did, I don't know what happened to it. It's called "Across the Brazos at Waco" and I think Billy Walker sang it. Now, that's close to home!!

Pat Green's "Songs About Texas", written by Walt Wilkins, is probably my favorite.."As if she were some old lover I used to know". I can take a drive down any back road in Texas with that song playing and it always fits. "There's a song in every Town" and "Hill Country rain, man it's a cleansing thing" sum it up perfectly. Great Topic Gordon!

Yellow Rose of Texas is my favorite. Not the one you sing in pre-school but the contry music version. It Still gives me the chills, my favorite line is when the women sang "I just kept your pride from dying" and the man sings "you saved my soul from hell". That song is the best and Anything from Willie Nelson!!!

Bud....it doesn't get much purer than old school country! George Strait put money in the bank with great songs like "Amarillo By Morning" ... "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" ... "All My Ex's Live In Texas". You probably are too young to remember "Texas In My Rear View Mirror" by Mac Davis who penned some incredible standards like "In The Ghetto" by Elvis. A little closer to YOUR age would be Restless Heart's "The Bluest Eyes in Texas". Even Brian Burns did a good remake of the old Hank Snow hit "I've Been Everywhere (In Texas)". Now, Gordon and the rest of you fellow co-anchors and reporters....my next blog will feature your IPOD favorites and a little insight into what music we "slip into" when in our own little world. So, get set to cough up the details! And let's hear some of those old-school classics once in a while. Pat Green and all those newbies won't be too insulted!

One of my favorite Texas songs is"San Antonio Rose", I'm sure the song came out before most of you were born.

This one is easy for me. "Somewhere Down In Texas" by Jason Boland and the Stragglers. Great song by a great band. Interestingly enough, it was written by an Okie.
