Freedom of speech is one of the single most important guarantees afforded us Americans.  It is a promise many have given their lives to protect.   Odds are, you and I both agree that everyone has a right to vocalize their viewpoints on any and all subjects, even - maybe especially - those that strike controversial chords.

That right should be coveted.   With few exceptions, however, NOT in covert ways.  If it is important enough for you to speak, write or display - it should be something you are not ashamed to pen your name to.    I find it sad that so many "posters" (those who give their opinions on persons and subjects offered on our web channel) hide their comments behind pseudonyms and very often behind the i.d. "anonymous".

Do you really NOT want those who know you to see the words and read the opinions that truly represent how you feel and who you are?   That seems so hypocritical to me.  Perhaps you are simply venting out of disgust and anger and would prefer to keep that venom "under cover"?     This is certainly your right and our editors allow those anonymous opinions to be posted, as long as you "keep it clean."   As a frequent reader, however, I openly admit that I cannot help but discount the value of those opinions when I know that the writer is too afraid or ashamed to sign a name to the post.  I am also truly sorry that there are those among us who are rude and mean-spirited.  I guess it is the personal attacks that seem so unnecessary.  There is nothing wrong with expressing criticism or an opposing thought or feeling as long as it retains a modicum of respect.  If you truly feel a certain way about a subject, be man or woman enough to claim it!

One final thought:  Please know that if the anonymous rhetoric or personal hatred is aimed at you or someone you know, you and they should consider the lack of courage the anonymous writer displayed when he or she hit the "submit" button!

I was especially pleased to see you write up in "Waco Today" A lot of water has gone under the bridge since our first meeting years ago whe I brought batteries for the toys that needed them on your Toys for Tots years ago. I am retired (TIRED) now from the Dr Pepper Museum but on occasion they still ask me to get dressed and take part in a special project they might have. They could not have choosen a more perfect subject and it makes me grin when I can say----Rusty, why I know him! Best Wishes on all that you undertake to do.Best Wishes. "OLD DOC"

Unfortunately, the ease of hiding behind the computer monitor and a false name--or "anonymous"--brings out the worst in some people. It's a widespread problem on the internet as a whole, whether it's on blogs, forums, or anywhere else. The sad truth is that the actions that people do in private, when they think that nobody else is looking or that nobody else will know, actually demonstrates their true character.

When you live in a small town you sometimes have to play it on the safe side when writing. Giving your name can be a safty issue.I don't think I need to always give my name when I write something what I think is what I think ,if it isn't liked hit the delete key.

Rusty, that was right on target. It is cowardly to not sign your barbs or attacks. It's a modern day "poison pen" letter. Seems like the editor wouldn't accept anonymous comments, but I guess it'd be just as easy to sign a false name. One thing that puzzles me though, is how or why does the editor decide whose comment gets on and whose gets cut? I have posted comments that didn't make it and I wasn't using profanity, or hate speech etc? Are there rules? and if so what are they? Thanks Rusty, have enjoyed you for years.

Rusty, this is absolutely the best blog KWTX has posted! You have so sincerely expressed what a great many viewers feel when it involves "tacky" or "hateful" comments left by the "unsigned." Thanks for the eloquent thoughts. It would be nice if a few of your co-anchors would put the silly stuff aside and put real thoughts behind their blogs!
