UPDATE: LIVE BLOG TONIGHT!!! We will be here chatting with you at kwtx.com for the next installment of "EliteXC Saturday Night Fights. Bookmark http://www.kwtx.com/blogs/tvblog/25647339.html and we'll see you tonight at 8pm CT!
Depending on who you ask, the first EliteXC "Saturday Night Fights" telecast was a big success or a big disaster. Around six million people watched the fights, but MMA purists say that the fights were minor league at best. Either way, we're going to have a round two.
CBS and EliteXC announced that the next "Saturday Night Fights" broadcast will be on Saturday July 26, live from Stockton, California. The fights on CBS and KWTX News 10 will start at 8pm.
There will be four fights on the broadcast that night, highlighted by the rematch between Robbie Lawler and Scott Smith for the EliteXC middleweight crown.
Now if you are newbie like me to MMA and watched the fights, you will remember that these two guys fought on the first broadcast. The fight was ended early when Smith got poked in the eye. If you didn't see the poke, trust me that seeing that in high definition is like a car wreck. You didn't want to look but you couldn't turn away. It was shaping up to be the fight on the night before that happened. The fight was declared a no contest and Lawler kept his title.
In a second world title fight on CBS, Jake Shields, who has won nine in a row, gets a shot at a world title against Nick Thompson, who has won 12 straight adn 20 of his last 21 fights.
And in another fight, Stockton native Nick Diaz will face off against Thomas Denny. Denny has won four of his last five fights and Diaz is looking for a win to stay in the running for a rematch with EliteXC lightweight champion K.J. Noons.
The announcers will be the same as before with Gus Johnson doing play-by-play, analysts Frank Shamrock and Mauro Ranallo, and reporter Karyn Bryant. The will be more fights planned for the July 26 fight night and will be announced at a later date. And if you want even more fighting, three live fights will be shown on the pay channel Showtime starting at seven that night. The Showtime match-ups also will be announced in the near future.
So fight fans, I'm curious. I've heard of UFC and now EliteXC. How many major leagues are there out there and how do they rank? Is EliteXC behind UFC or are there other leagues better than one or both of them? Help a newbie out here!
