For our loyal MMA blog readers, here's your updated (at least for now) schedule of fighters for fight night on Saturday October 4th:
CBS EliteXC Saturday Night Fights brings mixed martial arts back to prime time network television on Saturday, Oct. 4, airing live at 8pm on News 10. The show takes place at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Fla., and is headlined by one of MMA's living legends, Ken Shamrock, batting newcomer and internet sensation Kimbo Slice. Those who saw Kimbo first nationally televised fight in May knows that he can punch, but if has to go to the ground, he could be in trouble.
In a women's bout, Gina Carano returns to the cage to take on Kelly Kobald. And in a champion vs. champion fight, EliteXC welterweight titleholder Jake Shields defends against Cage Rage welterweight kingpin Paul Daley.
FIGHT UPDATE! Following the disappointment of many of the fighters on the now rescheduled Oct. 11 Affliction show, two top heavyweights have landed on the Oct. 4 CBS-EliteXC Saturday Night Fights show as former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski takes on the only ever International Fight League heavyweight champion in Roy Nelson.
The news was confirmed by EliteXC in a joint venture by the promotion, CBS and Donald Trump’s Affliction Entertainment.
"This is yet another testament to EliteXC’s willingness to work with other MMA promotions to bring the best possible fights to the broadest possible audience," said Jeremy Lappen, head of the Live Fight Division of EliteXC. "Special thanks to the hard working-team at Affliction and of course our partners at CBS and Showtime."
Arlovski is coming off of an impressive win over Ben Rothwell at the debut Affliction show in which he handed the fighter his first loss in 13 fights. The Belarus native was originally supposed to face Josh Barnett in the main event for the Affliction show that was postponed.
Roy Nelson, who was tapped originally to face Paul Buentello, steps up to the main card for the CBS-EliteXC show with the biggest test of his career taking on the former UFC champion.
Nelson has long been considered one of the top heavyweights in the world and a win over Arlovski would certainly be a huge boost for his career.
The fight between Arlovski and Nelson rounds out the five-fight event set for the CBS broadcast on Oct. 4.
So now the televised fight card for CBS EliteXC "Saturday Night Fights" is:
-Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock
-Jake Shields vs. Paul Daley (for EliteXC welterweight title)
-Andrei Arlovski vs. Roy "Big Country" Nelson
-Gina Carano vs. Kelly Kobold
-Murilo "Ninja" Rua vs. Benji Radach
