The soap opera "Guiding Light" is switching off after a 72-year run that predates television.

CBS says the show will have its final episode on Friday, September 18. Like most daytime dramas, "Guiding Light" has suffered from declining ratings and CBS is looking for a lower-cost alternative to the hour of programming.

The Guinness Book of World Records has cited it as the longest-running television drama, starting as a 15-minute serial on NBC Radio in January 1937 and debuted on CBS television in 1952, focusing on the Bauer family of Springfield.

While it has been on the air forever, it is consistently the lowest rated of the soap operas.  The show tried a new approach to save money by shooting with more of a "reality show" feel, but it still didn't bring viewers.

No word on what will take the place of "Light," but it will more than likely be a game show or some sort of talk show.

"Guiding Light" is taped at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City.

I can't believe that CBS would take this off the air after so long. It will join the ranks of Dark Shadows, Ryans Hope/The City & others I can't think of right now. Its sad when an icon gets put out to pasture.

Posted by: Anonymous I am sad .. it's something i shared with my Mom growing up and have continued since I became grown.
