KEMPNER, TEXAS (February 24, 2010)--Gene Isenhour, who is the 7th cousin of Dwight D. Eisenhower, tells us he's found 116 different spellings of his last name. 116. A number that almost equals how many different things he does for his community.
Tucked away in Lampasas County, the city of Kempner takes up only a 2-point-2 square mile stretch of central Texas. So if you blink, you might miss it.
But you would have to be in one serious state of hibernation to miss what mayor Gene Isenhour has done for his city.
"Gene is just one in a million," says assistant city secretary Trudy Davis.
After serving on the city council for five years, Isenhour took over as mayor in January of 2005. Prior to that, he was Kempner's volunteer fire chief for thirteen years. He's also a Deacon at the First Baptist church. And guess what, Isenhour doesn't let any of that get in the way of his "day job".
Isenhour states, "I work in San Saba for Hill Country Transit District, as their director of Human Resources. And I leave the house about six o'clock in the morning. My day normally ends with Hill Country Transit District around 4:30 in the evening, and I make my way here to city hall."
Davis adds, "But this is a full-time job also. He's out there at the park on Saturdays running water lines, he's out there cutting Cedars."
And he's pretty good at his job as the mayor, even though he refuses to accept a pay check for it.
Thanks to Isenhour, Kempner is building it's first ever city park. He gives a lot of credit to his staff, but according to them, he's the star.
And Gene Isenhour is also February's News 10 Boss of the Month.
"It means a lot. By this selection, it says something for our staff and says something for our city," notes Isenhour.
