Sheehan, Protesters Sue McLennan County
(June 30, 2006)--Anti-war protester Cindy Sheehan sued McLennan County Friday over roadside camping and parking bans near President Bush's Crawford-area ranch.
The California woman was in Waco Friday to file the suit, which also names the sheriff and individual county commissioners.
The suit by Sheehan and four others asks that the ordinances not be enforced during protests in August and that they ultimately be declared void.
Sheehan’s son Casey, a 1st Cavalry Division soldier, died in 2004 in Iraq.
She reinvigorated the anti-war movement last summer with her peace vigil at what protesters dubbed "Camp Casey" that started in ditches off a road leading to Mr. Bush's ranch.
The group also set up "Camp Casey II" on a private, one-acre lot closer to the ranch.
Neighbors complained of traffic congestion from the August rally that drew thousands to the rural area.
McLennan County commissioners took action one month later.
In April some of the 12 anti-war activists who were arrested for violation of the ordinance during a Thanksgiving protest near the President’s Central Texas ranch gathered to demand a day in court.
The twelve, including Vietnam-era anti-war activist Daniel Ellsberg, mounted the protest last fall to challenge a McLennan County ordinance banning roadside camping.
