The first officers to arrive found Ray inside the pickup where had shot himself after driving the truck fully inside the house.
He was flown by helicopter to Austin in critical condition.
Investigators think the valves of the two propane tanks in the truck were left open in an attempt to spark an explosion.
A 20-year-old woman was trapped under the vehicle.
She was airlifted to an area hospital with what the Milam County Sheriff’s Office said appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries.
