Cruz Will Renounce Canadian Citizenship

AUSTIN (August 20, 2013)—After releasing his birth certificate, which shows he’s an American citizen, although he was born in Canada, U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, says he will renounce his Canadian citizenship.

Cruz first gave a copy of the document to The Dallas Morning News, but then later provided it to The Associated.

The tea party favorite has been mentioned as a possible 2016 Republican presidential candidate even though only natural born U.S. citizens can hold the office.

Cruz had long maintained that he was a U.S. citizen at birth because his mother is American, but he issued a statement Monday citing suggestions he may actually hold dual U.S.-Canadian citizenship.

As a result, he said he would formally renounce his Canadian citizenship.

"Nothing against Canada, but I'm an American by birth,” he said.
