Pro-Life Congressman Urged Pregnant Mistress To Get An Abortion

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (October 10, 2012)—U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais, R-Tenn., a freshman who’s running for a second term on a pro-life platform, urged his pregnant mistress to get an abortion a decade ago, according to a transcript of the recorded conversation.

The undated phone recording appears to have been made before DesJarlais' divorce from his wife, Susan, was finalized in 2001.

In the conversation, DesJarlais told the unidentified woman that he was concerned that she had delayed getting an abortion, and said he was willing to travel to Atlanta with her to get the procedure done.

The congressman's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but did not dispute the transcript to the Huffington Post, which first reported it.

DesJarlais, a physician who opposes abortion rights, defeated Democratic Rep. Lincoln Davis in 2010.
