Small Town’s City Council Votes To Make Gun Ownership Mandatory

NELSON, Ga. (April 2, 2013)--The City Council in Nelson, Ga., north of Atlanta has approved an ordinance that makes gun ownership mandatory.

The ordinance, which goes into effect in 10 days, doesn’t include penalties and exempts anyone who objects, convicted felons and those with certain mental and physical disabilities, however.

Councilman Duane Cronic, who sponsored the measure, says he knows the ordinance won't be enforced but he still believes it will make the town safer.

Backers of the ordinance acknowledge they were largely seeking to make a point about gun rights.

The vote illustrates how the response to the Newtown, Conn., massacre varies widely in different parts of the country.
