(October 17, 2008)--The McCain campaign said Friday Barack Obama is "simply lying" about the Republican candidate's plans for Medicare.

Obama, campaigning in Virginia Friday, claimed John McCain wants to cut $882 billion from Medicare over a decade to finance his health care plan.

The McCain statement says while the Republican is calling for trimming spending, not one single benefit is cut.

A key part of McCain's plan is to provide tax credits to encourage Americans to buy private health insurance.

To pay for it, he's proposed requiring workers to pay income taxes on the health benefits they now receive tax-free from their employers.

McCain's campaign says additional funding will be required to cover the full cost of the program.

Obama says part of that would come from Medicare and that McCain's plan would mean a cut of more than 20 percent in Medicare benefits next year, with fewer places to get care and less freedom in picking doctors.
