NEW YORK (November 04, 2009)-Democrats claimed a New York House seat that traditionally had gone to GOP candidates; New York state now has only two Republican congressmen in its 29-seat delegation.
Democrat and retired Air Force Capt. Bill Owens, running in an historically Republican stronghold, capitalized on a split that emerged between Republican moderates and conservatives.
Owens defeated businessman Doug Hoffman, the Conservative Party candidate, 49 percent to 45 percent, after a boost from unified labor efforts and the withdrawal of the Republican candidate over the weekend.
Republicans hadn't lost in the region in more than a century.
Owens will be up for election for a full term next year.
In New Jersey, on the other hand, voters ousted incumbent Gov. Jon Corzine in favor of the republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Christie.
The state has been battered by the economic recession and plagued by political corruption.
Christie unseated the deep-pocketed but unpopular governor after a bruising contest that focused on New Jersey's ailing economy and its highest-in-the-nation property taxes.
The 47-year-old Christie is the first member of his party in a dozen years to win a statewide contest in heavily Democratic New Jersey.
Republicans also reclaimed the Governor’s seat in a closely watched Virginia race.
Republican Bob McDonnell wooed Virginia's independent voters Tuesday to win a landslide election for governor.
The win comes just a year after the state bucked tradition and voted for Barack Obama.
McDonnell, a conservative former state attorney general, had about 60 percent of the vote with most precincts reporting.
He takes back the governor's office after eight years of Democrat control.

Obama supporters voted for "change" not socialism and that will be the main issue in 2010. Why do you think they are trying to cram so much legislation down our throats now?
Personal attacks on me do not make me wrong & you right. Personal attacks just prove you have NO FACTS & NO CLASS! LOL...LOL
I am beginning to wonder if TEXAN, CITIZEN, & DR WHO (& maybe others)are the same person, trying to convince folks the Conservative Party (supposedly the Teabaggers)is a viable alternative to the Republican & Democratic Paries. That makes sense-with the Republican Party on life support but not quite dead yet. If Republicans can be inclusive & moderately conservative, they can be resusitated. Otherwise, they bite the bullet. The Conservative Party will be a "spoiler" like Ross Perot and Ralph Nader, siphoning off votes from those qualifed candiates who could make a difference in Americans lives but cannot because they weren't elected. NY-23 election shows that Hard=Right Extreme Conservatives will be rejected by the voters. But, hey, this is America- so keep right on expressing yourself, whoever you are. Again, personal attacks on me do not make me wrong & you right--it just shows you have NO CLASS!
