ALEXANDRIA, Va. (October 13, 2009)--Former Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson was sentenced Friday to 13 years in prison for taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for using his influence to broker business deals in Africa.
The sentence handed down Friday in suburban Washington was far less than the nearly 30 years prosecutors had sought for Jefferson, a Democrat who represented parts of New Orleans.
Agents investigating the case found $90,000 wrapped in foil and hidden in boxes of pie crusts in Jefferson's freezer.
Prosecutors asked a judge to sentence Jefferson to at least 27 years.
He was convicted earlier this year on charges including bribery and racketeering.
Prosecutors said he took in roughly $500,000 in bribes and sought millions more.

He really should have gotten 'more' time than this, since he had the National Guard Helicopter fly him to his house, lower him down to his balcony, during the Katrina Hurricane rescue effort, so he could get his cash/money out of his freezer. Then had a National Guard Truck take him back to his house to get the rest(also during the Katrina Hurricane rescue efforts)!! Other people were loosing their lives/houses during this foolishness!!
