NEW YORK (February 4, 2010)—Sen. John McCain R-Arizona, has introduced legislation that would require manufacturers of dietary supplements to register with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and to disclose the ingredients.

McCain said the measure would give the FDA authority for a mandatory recall if a product were found to be unsafe.

Baseball commissioner Bud Selig urged adoption of the bill, which was introduced Wednesday and is co-sponsored by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N. D.

Several athletes who have tested positive under various drug programs have blamed their troubles on unlabeled substances in dietary supplements.

McCain has long lamented steroid use in baseball.
