Battle Brews In Austin Over End-Of-Life Decisions

AUSTIN (March 10, 2013)--A battle is brewing in the Texas Legislature among right-to-life groups, not over when life begins, but instead over the rules that govern the end of a terminally-ill patient's life.

The dispute involves what should happen when doctors and the family of someone who is dying in a hospital disagree on continuing medical treatment.

Texas Right to Life says patients and their families should make all decisions, but The Texas Alliance for Life, Christian Life Commission and the Texas Catholic Conference say doctors should not be forced to provide treatment they think is unethical.

Medical groups want ethics committees to decide, and then give families the chance to find another doctor if they disagree.

Activists are asking conservative Republicans who control the Legislature to decide which course Texas should take.
