City Council In East Texas City Urges Residents To Own Firearms

GUN BARREL CITY (May 1, 2013)—The City Council in Gun Barrel City in East Texas has passed a resolution encouraging homeowners to own firearms.

The council approved the measure on April 23.

It urges residents to have weapons in their homes, "together with ammunition,” but provides exemptions, such as for those with a mental disability or who "conscientiously oppose" having a weapon.

The city is steeped in firearms; it’s logo features two revolvers and the motto is, "We'll shoot straight with you."

Mayor Paul Eaton said Wednesday the vote was meant to support the constitutional right to own a firearm.

He said dozens of responses to the vote have been overwhelmingly positive.
