SAN ANTONIO (June 23, 2014) Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Attorney General Greg Abbott toured a temporary shelter for young immigrants Monday and blamed the Obama administration for the surge in unaccompanied minors pouring into the U.S.
More than 52,000 young immigrants have crossed into the U.S. in recent months.
Cruz and Abbott, the GOP candidate for governor, toured a temporary shelter Monday that has been set up for some of the children at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
Gov. Rick Perry was scheduled the day to visit a similar federal holding facility later in the day in the Rio Grande Valley.
Cruz and Abbott say they were told stories of children being ordered by human traffickers to cut off fingers and ears of other kids as a way of extorting money.
Cruz blamed the surge in minors on the Obama administration and a belief they'll be granted amnesty.
“The Obama Administration’s inconsistent policies and failure to enforce the rule of law have created this crisis at the border,” the two Republicans said in a joint statement.
“President Obama’s failure to secure the border has empowered transnational gangs and cartel to smuggle people into our state from around the world – including members of deadly gangs like MS13. Inaction by the federal government has left Texas with no other choice but to activate the immediate deployment of the Texas Department of Public Safety.”
