Democrats Lead GOP In Voter Registration In Battleground States

WASHINGTON (October 11, 2012)--A robust voter registration push by President Barack Obama's re-election campaign has resulted in more Democrats than Republicans on the rolls in most battleground states, including Florida and Nevada, according to data from state election boards and promoted Thursday by the Obama campaign.

But Republicans have had their own registration success, narrowing that Democratic advantage since 2008 in many of the battleground states, including Iowa.

GOP officials say they have put more resources into persuading independent voters who are already registered to cast their ballots for party nominee Mitt Romney.

Mr. Obama's campaign argues its ability to register more new voters is indicative of swing state field operations that also have the resources to get voters to the polls, particularly during early voting.

Campaign officials say a deeper look at the registration numbers shows an uptick in Hispanics and young people.
