KERMIT (November 6, 2013) Former Winkler County Attorney Steve Taliaferro was sentenced to jail Wednesday after pleading guilty to solicitation of prostitution and official oppression.
Taliaferro, who recently resigned, was ordered to serve 45 days in the Winkler County jail under the terms of a plea deal.
Special prosecutor Stephen Stallings says Taliaferro propositioned a woman in April who had contacted the county attorney's office to settle a misdemeanor violation.
Stallings says audio recordings showed that Taliaferro, 65, solicited the woman, saying he would settle her case if she acquiesced.
"What this man did was absolutely reprehensible,” he said.
The county attorney in Winkler handles misdemeanor cases among other responsibilities.
