Here We Go Again; Texas Republicans, Democrats Clash On Redistricting

AUSTIN (April 18, 2013)--Texas Republicans are proposing legislation that would adopt the current political map, but Democrats say they’ll fight that effort.

State Sen. Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo, offered a redistricting bill Thursday that would formally adopt interim maps drawn by a federal court in San Antonio.

The maps for Congressional, state Senate and House districts were used for the 2012 election while a federal court in Washington, D.C. reviewed maps approved by the Legislature.

That federal three-judge panel determined that the Republican-controlled Legislature intentionally discriminated against African Americans and Latinos.

The San Antonio court is now considering drawing yet another set of political maps.

Seliger said that legally adopting the current maps would put an end to the civil rights lawsuit, but the Mexican American Legislative Caucus said the court fight would continue.
