House Republicans Endorse Pre-Obama Spending Levels

WASHINGTON (January 25, 2011)--Republicans controlling the U.S. House have gone on record in favor of cutting spending for most domestic agencies by almost 20 percent.

The nonbinding 256-165 vote is in keeping with a campaign promise to slash the federal budget by returning domestic agencies to 2008 budget levels in place before President Barack Obama took office.

Tuesday's vote was the opening salvo in an upcoming battle over the budget that will pit the House GOP against Mr. Obama and the Democratic-controlled Senate.

The actual cuts would be made in a subsequent spending bill.

The tally came just hours before Mr. Obama's State of the Union address in which he'll propose a five-year freeze for domestic agencies at current levels, which is more than $80 billion a year more than Republicans want.

If the republicans are in favor, we're all in trouble.
