WACO (May 21, 2013)--A group of local tea party members joined a nationwide effort Tuesday, picketing and protesting outside the Waco office of the Internal Revenue Service.

About a dozen protesters carried signs bearing the message that the IRS has outgrown its usefulness and should be abolished.

Passing drivers on Sanger Avenue honked their horns in support of the protest.

The same scene was playing out across the country at noon local time on Tuesday after the protest was organized by the national tea party group at IRS offices nationwide.

Spokesmen for the protest group said they hope the effort will spell the beginning of the end for the IRS.

"We want them abolished," said Lynda Simmons, secretary of the local chapter of the John Birch Society.

"We want to repeal the 16th amendment and replace it with the fair tax," she said.

The IRS had admitted that it targeted tea party groups seeking tax exempt status for particular scrutiny.

The local protest lasted a little more than a half-hour.
