NEW YORK (January 1, 2014) New York's new mayor Bill de Blasio was sworn in Wednesday vowing to "give life to the hope of so many in our city."
"Big dreams are not a luxury reserved for a privileged few,” he said.
Former President Bill Clinton administered the oath, as thousands of people braved cold New Year's Day temperatures to salute the new mayor.
De Blasio thanked his family, his supporters and the city for "taking on the elite" and pushing for change.
The Democrat is pledging to pursue a sweeping liberal agenda as he takes over from Michael Bloomberg, who was mayor for 12 years and who was among those attending the ceremony.
One speaker after another at Wednesday’s event railed against the city's inequality and delivered sharp rebukes to Bloomberg, although they never mentioned him by name.
