Obama Says GOP Walked Away From Immigration Overhaul

MIAMI (September 20, 2012)--President Barack Obama Thursday told a large Latino television audience that Republicans walked away from comprehensive immigration overhaul and said he has not wavered in his support for changes in immigration law.

In an interview with the Spanish language channel Univision, Mr. Obama said he didn't offer an immigration reform package because he had to deal with the financial crisis, but he said he shouldn't be blamed because he is not "all powerful" and wouldn't have been able to win the 60 votes necessary in the Senate to succeed.

He pointed to administrative efforts he has taken to permit some young people who came to the United States illegally to avoid deportation.
