Obama Tells Midshipmen Sexual Assault Threatens Trust In Military

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (May 24, 2013)--President Barack Obama Friday reminded U.S. Naval Academy graduates that their honor depends on what they do when nobody is looking.

Friday’s commencement speech came in the midst of reports of widespread sexual assault and misconduct throughout the military.

Mr. Obama said it's a crime that has "no place in the greatest military on earth."

He ended his 20-minute address by recognizing "how the misconduct of some can have effects that ripple far and wide."

A Pentagon report estimates as many as 26,000 military members may have been sexually assaulted last year and that thousands of victims are still unwilling to come forward.

Mr. Obama said he is determined to stop the problem.

He also vowed to maintain America's "military superiority," even in an era of budget cuts, and promised to provide troops with all of the resources they need.
